Welcome to the Spring Project. This is an open source project developing a new realtime strategy game.
To find out more about the project, take a look at the features page and the FAQ.
There is also plenty of additional content available for download, such as new maps and unit packs, and more interesting scripts for the new random enemies feature.
New lobby server lead Lately Betalord got a lot less involved with Spring after having written, maintained and run the current Spring lobby server application - TASServer - for multiple years.
For a long time this was the only server in development, but recently a new one, called uberserver, was written by aegis. Contrary to TASServer this server is currently in active development and already has most important features of TASServer implemented, plus a set of brand new features.
It is for these reasons that I hereby announce that aegis currently is the new lobby server lead - lobby CTO ;-) -, who will plan for a smooth transition to uberserver and then: more new cool innovative features :P
I've also asked SwiftSpear to become head moderation, or, as he'd like to call it, 'community lead'. He's been involved for a very long time already and has in practice already grown to head moderation long time ago, so it's really time now to finally make this official. So you can welcome SwiftSpear as 'community lead'.
I'd say, thank them all - Betalord, aegis and SwiftSpear - for the huge amounts of time they already used for making Spring a better place and wish them good luck :-)
Downtime over The server has been moved to its new location, so we have now passed the scheduled downtime. So we will now resume the regular operation with unscheduled downtime only.
Downtime incoming. (probably) Fnordia (our current webadmin/server host) is going to be moving sometime in early march. Effectively this means that our primary server will be getting unplugged and moved to a different location, so until internet is set up at that location there will be no box to server our site (estimate 1 week or longer).
It should be relatively easy to find a backup lobby server to pitchhit while our primary server is down, but running a backup for the site and forums is a little more difficult. We'll be trying to preserve as much functionality as we can manage, but the worst case scenario is that we lose our home site for a while, just so everyone has a heads up.
Anyways, wish Fnord a happy and successful move and offer him shiny trinkets to get the site back up as quickly as possible! :-)
Spring 0.76b1 release A bit late for a christmas present, but here it is anyway: Spring 0.76b1
An incredible amount of changes made it's way into this release of Spring. To name just one, the installer now allows you to download various mods and maps during the install process. Because of this, there also is no updating installer available anymore: you can use the same installer to upgrade your 0.75b2 install or to do a fresh full install.
Please thank all people who have contributed to this Spring release:
Betalord, LordMatt (pimped the installer), Auswaschbar (full network code rewrite!), koshi (new settings.exe), KDR_11k, Satirik (TASClient), Kloot, Victor, trepan (our LUA master), submarine (AAI), lurker, Belmakor, tombom (changelog guru), imbaczek, FLOZi, ILM_Titan, Exit_Wound, tc-, jcnossen, yuritch, jK, BrainDamage, qknight, rattle, AF, malric, pbrook, wcspxyz and semi.
Additionally thanks to everyone who helped with the (not so) weekly testing! Especially the last week this was really necessary to get rid of the last major bugs.
As always, source code is available too, either in a .tar.bz2 (for Linux users only) or in a .zip (for Windows users only). It is, however, recommended to check out the source from our SVN repository if you want to do any serious development on it.
Notes:
- When using the new settings.exe (possibly from the installer), it may ask you a question about where to find unitsync.dll. In this case, browse to your Spring folder and select unitsync.dll. After that, I will work (and keep working).
- By selecting the mods XTA or BA in the installer you are legally required to own the original total annihilation game. The other mods are free of such content, and can be selected any time.
- If you get error: missing default cursor after you downloaded a mod, download this archive, unzip it, and put the 3 files inside in C:\Program Files\Spring\base\ (or wherever you installed Spring). Remember that you may only legally do this if you own the original total annihilation game. If you don't own it, you have to play only mods that don't give this error.
- settings.exe simple mode sets ground decals to insanely high values. Use only expert mode, and make sure Ground decals on the Render details tab is set to 1. Anything higher will just cost you (a huge amount) of frames per second.
EDIT: IMPORTANT NOTE: there was a little accident while updating, all accounts info have been lost for last few days. We restored it back to sunday's backup, just before the 0.75b1 release. Any accounts created after sunday are lost, also if you renamed your account that info has been lost too. Sorry for the inconveniences!
Please thank all people who have contributed to this Spring release:
Kloot, trepan, quantum, SJ, Yeha, malric, AF, Vincent Pelletier, Viktor Muraviev, KDR_11k, M2, yuritch, FLOZi, submarine, semi, det, imbaczek, zizu, Betalord, Auswaschbar, ILMTitan
Also thanks to everyone who helped testing the sort-of-weekly development builds :-) and anyone who contributed time in whichever other way ;-)
Notes:
- If there's lots of disk activity when starting Spring or TASClient.exe after a fresh install, it may be caching your mods and maps. This can take quite a while if you have many maps and mods.
- The installer has been hotfixed some times in the first hour(s) after it was posted. If your installer is corrupt, it may be because it was updated while you downloaded it. Sorry for this, redownloading will fix it.
- The new unit/feature highlight widget requires an image file that
was not packaged along with 0.75b1. You can get a suitable image
file from: http://trepan.bzflag.bz/spring/highlight_strip.png , then move
the image file into your: $SPRING/LuaUI/Images/ directory.
New lead Recently Yeha indicated that he doesn't have time to be the Spring lead developer anymore. I'd like to thank him for his work as lead on especially the 0.74 release series. He asked me whether I'd like to take over, which I initially refused because of lack of time.
I've been closely involved with many Spring things that Spring leads have done since the 0.70 release however and in practice I'll probably be doing the next few releases anyway, so it seems a bit more transparent if I officially become lead developer. ;-)
Bugfix release, 0.74b3 Version 0.74b3 is available for download. This version fixes some bugs but also contains a few new options which can be found in the changelog.
New version, 0.74b1 A new version of Spring is ready for download.
